| | Highlights from the Learning Links Programme | | | UWA Virtual Universe Project: With the aid of building plans, photographs and the Google Sketch Up programme, students from Shenton College, Belmont City College and Perth Modern School worked in teams to develop 3 D models of selected UWA buildings for eventual uploading on the Google Earth website profiling the University. The students worked under the watchful eyes of Dr Chris Thorne and his team. It was a challenge for the students but they had loads of fun as their feedback illustrates: "It was great to be able to work towards what I want to be after I finish school." "It was fun being part of a team and knowing they have your back." | ASPIRE 2008 Arts student Laura Davies who walked away with the prize in the WA Raw Comedy Competition urged high school students to follow their passion when she spoke at ASPIRE 2008. The inaugural event was attended by 230 high school students who were given the message that commitment and time is required to achieve goals in life. | | | EXSCITEMENT An event held to mark National Science Week which was attended by over 200 high school students from Shenton College, Perth Modern School, Como Secondary College, Kingsway Christian College and Aranmore Catholic College. Special guest speakers included Professor Peter Quinn, Dr Oliver Berry and Australian of the Year (2005) Clinical Professor Dr Fiona Wood who is also the Head of the Burns Unit at the Royal Perth Hospital. | SHADOW A STUDENT For the second consecutive year, students from Belmont City College got a taste of what it is like to be at uni when they participated in the Shadow A Student programme. The visiting students attended lectures, tutorials and basically ‘hung out’ for the day with their uni role model. The feedback from all involved was positive as indicated in a comment from a Belmont student: "The best thing was seeing the social and educational sides of university life and being able to interact with a current university student". | | | | |
