Reading and taking notes

Managing the 'information overload' can be a tricky business but these sessions will give you useful techniques for managing your reading, extracting useful information from lectures, taking notes from your reading and managing information using mind mapping.

  • How to take notes in lectures - Many of us, especially those of us new to tertiary study, find it difficult (ok – impossible!) to follow the lecture and take meaningful notes at the same time. This workshop helps you learn to take clear notes you can use with confidence later.
  • How to take notes from readings - With so many book chapters, journal papers and lecture notes to read, it can often feel as if you’re drowning in course reading. If you sometimes make notes of what you have read, and then wonder afterwards what you wrote down (and why) and how all those words are connected, you are not alone! This workshop will help you read with a purpose, ‘scan’ for information you need and remember material for longer. It will also explore techniques you can use to ensure your notes are easy to read again, even after you have put that book away!

Exam Techniques

  • How to prepare and revise for exams - When you have assignments to hand in and reading to catch up on, it can be easy to put off your exam preparation. This workshop will outline the stages in getting ready for exams.
  • How to write better exam essays - Writing essays in an exam situation can seem like a slightly chaotic process! This workshop will describe the range of things you can do to prepare yourself for essay exams.
