Student Appointments

One of the main reasons that students request appointments is to get feedback on written work.  Before deciding on an appointment, however, we would encourage you to consider other ways you can develop your writing while at uni. One of these ways is to discuss your work at a Study Smarter drop-in.  Check out the information below for more details.

The STUDYSmarter drop-in service (free to UWA students) operates 1-2pm daily during teaching weeks in the main foyer of the Reid Library. Drop-ins are a great place for you to get help or ask for advice on any aspect of your academic study, such as:

  • interpreting your essay question
  • organising your ideas
  • developing your argument
  • reading critically
  • taking effective notes
  • managing your time

Student appointments with a member of the STUDYSmarter team (free to UWA students) allow you to get more in-depth feedback on your writing, but they do require more planning on your part. Here's what you do:

  • make a booking through Student Services reception either by coming in or calling them on 6488 2423
  • the reception staff will give you (or email you) a "Coversheet for Written Work", which you need to submit with your work before an appointment can be made. Your work can be submitted in hard copy or electronically.
PLEASE NOTE: allow plenty of time when making an appointment - during busy periods you may have to wait several days.

The adviser will read your work carefully and then meet with you to discuss your writing. The focus of the appointment is not on editing, proofreading or 'fixing' your work, but on giving feedback on the strengths and weaknesses of your writing and what you can do to further develop your skills.

Many students find it quite helpful to discuss an assignment that they have already handed in and/or received comments on. If this is the case, it is very helpful for the adviser to be able to see the comments you have received.

Other ways you can access our free STUDYSmarter services and improve your study skills:

  • Jump Start resources (quick tips online)
  • Workshops (more than 30 topics per semester)
  • Podcasts (every workshop we run goes online)
  • Study skills library books (borrow from Student Services)
  • Online resources (check out the website)

You don't have to register for workshops. Just sign up for our weekly Get Smart e-newsletter. It will keep you up-to-date with what’s happening. You can unsubscribe at any time.

During student appointments we

Don't edit your work for you

Don't advise you on what content to include

Don't examine the same piece of work more than once

Can advise you on how to improve your writing style

Can advise you on how to structure your essay or report

Can advise you on how to edit and proof read your own work
