UniSpeakers

This group aims to help students overcome a major fear and improve a key communication skill. Public Speaking is a requirement in many UWA units and is increasingly included as an assessment tool. Postgraduate students are expected to present to their peers as well as to their schools, funding bodies and at conferences.

This peer-learning group provides students with:

  • opportunities to practice speaking to an audience
  • an environment based on respect and personal development
  • individual feedback on existing presentation skills
  • practical recommendations for improvement
  • ongoing opportunities to build confidence and practice new skills
  • regular meetings with an experienced staff member and with students from all disciplines and study levels across UWA

Each meeting includes a brief information session on the focus topic and then students practice speaking for a short period before receving positive feedback and recommendations from the group.

And it WORKS!

"...I had my own [presentation] on the 16th of Sept and it was very succesfull! They were happy because I had eye contact with them - So a big THANK YOU because I have used the techniques that we learned and practiced in our sessions" -Quote from a UniSpeakers member.

Speaking workshops and UniSpeakers Club are held on Thursdays. Check out times, dates and venues listed on the FREE Learning and Language Skills Events calendar.

Survival Guides

There are also two LLRS Survival Guides that provide basic information on "Speaking to an Audience" and "Seminar Presentations." Other Survival Guides are available on the LLRS Resource Area page.
