The UWA Online Student Journey Project

About the project

The Online Student Journey Project applies Web 2.0 tools within the UWA Student Services Division and provides training to staff in the use of emerging technologies.  The project will enable staff to connect with students in online environments and to 'value-add' to the programs and services already offered to scaffold engagement beyond the classroom.

About the team

Dr. Lisa Cluett is the initiator and senior project officer for the UWA Online Student Journey project.  Lisa's role includes developing interactive online tools for Student Services, coordinating the staff Web 2.0 community and managing the pilot of the UWA Students Facebook page.  She researches and writes about the role of professional staff in online student engagement and does occasional teaching and liveblogging.

The project is sponsored by Jon Stubbs and coordinated by Dr. Judy Skene.  In July 2009, Lisa established the Student Services Emerging Technologies Advisory Group which consists of staff with an interest in the procedures and practices of using social media in the UWA context.  Members of the group are from Legal Services, the University Website Office, Public Affairs, ITS, Student Support and UniAccess.

Project Blog

This blog covers the 'inside story' of the online Student Journey project and is used for liveblogging activities at conferences and other events.  Blog posts are available via RSS or as Tweets by following lisacluett at www.twitter.com

Project wiki

This wiki stores documents, findings, commentary and other material relating to the project

Toolbox

The OSJ toolbox lists the social media tools recommended by this project and provides definitions, examples, instructions, advice and support on each of them.

W2C

The UWA staff Web 2.0 community group (W2C) is made up of staff from across the institution who are interested in using emerging technologies for student engagement.  We meet regularly for networking events and in July 2009 had our first half-day forum.

Any UWA staff interested in joining the W2C can go to the Facebook group and the W2C wiki.  If you do not use Facebook you can email lisa.cluett@uwa.edu.au to be added to the email list for this community.

Facebook sub-project

The UWA Students Facebook fan page is being piloted during the second half of 2009 and aims to engage potential, prospective and enrolled UWA students in an online community.  There are a number of documents relating to this sub-project (such as a project overview, a Survival Guide for students and a Guide for Student Services' staff). Staff from other institutions may find them useful and are asked to acknowledge this project as the original source of the materials.

Student Services Guide to Social media webpage

This webpage was created by the Onlien Student Journey project in consultation with the Student Services Emerging Technologies Advisory Group.  the guidelines are provided to staff and students when they access a social media site from the UWA website using a button and link.
