Introduction to Professional Engineering (IPE)

The IPE course is a core compulsory unit for First Year engineers. The STUDYSmarter team present 5 lectures in this course on topics including specific writing tasks, oral presentations, editing written work and exam strategies. These lectures were designed by Dr Lisa Cluett and are delivered by Learning Skills Associates.

Communication Stream of tutorials in Engineering

A stream of tutorials was developed and coordinated for first year Engineering students enrolled in IPE by Siri Barrett-Lennard in collaboration with Dr Brad Steppanbelt.  As part of this initiative, all students enrolled in the unit undertook an English Langauge Competency assessment (ELCA) at the beginning of semester that was designed, administered and marked by Siri. The results of this assessment determined the students' placement into either a Communications Stream or a Regular Stream of tutorials for the rest of Semester.  Siri conducted the ELCA again at the end of the semester for all students involved in the Communications Stream and for others who wished to improve their overall grade in the unit.

Tutor Training

Following a successful 2006 bid for an 'Improving Student Learning' grant, Siri was invited to provide training for the tutors of the Communications Stream.  Siri conducted training related to findings on the needs of international students, and to research on what constitutes good academic writing.  She isolated aspects of the unit according to language challenge and provided tutors with a guide based on the supplementary text in academic writing that was given to students in the Communications Stream.

3rd Year Engineering Project

Three lectures are presented to the third year Engineering students as part of their project unit. These lectures cover proposal writing, project management and report writing. The lectures are delivered by Dr Lisa Cluett by invitation from course co-ordinator Dr Ruza Ostrogonac.
