LACE EventsLACE builds friendship and fosters intercultural exchange through regular events. In the past we have had riverside barbeques, discussions about Australian movies, played word games and heard about teaching and learning in different countries. Descriptions and photos of most of our events are at the bottom of the page. The calendar of events for 2009 is below. If you sign-up to participate in LACE, we'll email you with details before each event. Events CalendarPlease note: In Semester 2, 2009, the first two LACE activities will be held on Tuesday afternoon and the last four on Friday afternoon. Semester 2, 2009 events 4 August, 2009 - 3pm-5pm - Scrabble & Boggle. Explore your knowledge of English vocabulary playing these enjoyable group games. It's a good way to spend a winter afternoon. Meet at 3pm in Guild seminar room 1, level 1, Student Services building, Guild Village (near optometrist). 18 August, 2009 - 3pm-5pm - Tuesday - Berndt Museum of Anthropology. Tour by Assistant Curator, Barbara Matters, a Nyungar woman. Barbara will also talk about aspects of Nyungar art and culture and the Stolen Generation. The Nyungars are the traditonal owners of lands in the southwest of Western Australia. Meet 3pm outside the Berndt Museum. 4 September , 2009 - 3pm-5pm - Friday - Tour Winthrop Hall and Tower. Terry Larder, coordinator of the Visitors Centre will take us on an amusing, informative and some might think physically demanding tour-the tower has lots of steps. Wear comfortable shoes and bring your camera. Meet 3pm outside the UWA Visitors Centre. 25 September, 2009 - 3pm-5pm, Friday - Edward de Courcy Clarke Earth Science Museum. This hands-on tour by Curator Jenny Bevan will see us using microscopes to observe stunning images of igneous rocks, micro fossils and minerals. Jenny promises it will be an eye-opening experience. We'll also learn something about the geological formation of Australia. Meet 3pm outside the Museum. 16 October 2009 - 3pm-5pm - Friday - BBQ on Matilda Bay - Celebrate the end of semester early. Good company, a beautiful location and free food and drinks. Meet at 3pm outside the entrance to the Student Services building (near the optometrist). 13 November 2009 - Friday - Film - Rabbit Proof Fence. This film tells the story of three young girls who, after being forcibly taken from their home and placed in an institution, escaped and walked thousands of kilometres home using the rabbit proof fence as a guide.
